An Inside Look at The Caste System
Is the caste system in India fair? If the system were fair, for every caste, job
opportunities would be in proportion to its share of the population. Of course
this would not happen because of the hierarchical structure of the caste
system. There are four classes in the Indian caste system. They are
priests, warriors, merchants, and the workers/peasants. A
worker’s main duty was to provide service to the upper-three classes. Once you
are born into a specific caste, you entitled are to that caste until you die. This
corrupt system results in the increased level of crime because of its unjust
rules. If a Brahmin (high caste) were to steal an apple, he would get
counseled and then later sent home , but if an untouchable was in his place,
then he would get sent to jail. Thus, there is not an equal measure of
justice/freedom for everyone. As a result, people’s thinking has become narrow
and limited. This also led to separatism. The modern generation on India find it
very hard to live in such society, especially for the ones considered
“untouchables”. They are the only ones who are isolated from the society. They
can’t marry out of their caste or even eat with people belonging to lower-castes
as social mixing is severely restricted. They cannot go to other people’s
houses. They cannot attend any parties. If they do attend a party, they have to
stay in one designated place and not touch anybody, especially while people are
eating. If the Untouchables touch food then the food gets thrown away or
given to the domestic animals such as cows and goats. One of my dad’s friends
came from a Hindu Brahmin family. When he was a little boy, he surely was not
aware of the caste system. He used to play with his friends who were lower caste
and untouchables. One day his grandmother spotted him playing with his friends.
When he returned home, his grandmother told him to take a shower outside of
their house and she burned the clothes he was wearing. Why does it matter
if a high caste child plays with a low caste child? These caste prejudices
continue to contaminate the society and this becomes an influential factor
especially during the time of elections. Politicians encourage and exploit these
attitudes for their own gains. Discrimination against lower-castes is widely
prevalent and has kept a large percentage of the Indian population
backwards. These untouchables held highly undesirable, disgusting, and often
dangerous jobs and as such were highly looked down upon by those in the caste
system. Those people who were thought of as "untouchables" are not allowed to
worship in the same place or drink water from the same sources. This has
been an obstacle to development of the country. The caste system is unfair
and truly serves no purpose or importance We all know that god created us equal
which means no one has a right to be separate/isolate others. Everyone has their
right to live their life freely and equally.
